Story of Prague Museum: Review and 15% discount
When you hear the word history museum, we usually expect display cases and long texts. We went to Story of Prague out of curiosity because it’s right in the centre and we wanted to find out how the museum would approach the history of Prague and the Czech Republic. In the end, we spent about 90 minutes there and left with a pleasant feeling that this is a different type of museum than we are used to.
The exhibition is divided into three floors and gradually takes you from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. It’s not just about the exhibited objects, but a combination of scenery, lighting, and a mobile app. Without the phone, it loses a lot of its magic in our opinion – the app is key, and without it, you’ll miss a large interactive part of the content.

What awaits you at the Story of Prague museum
The entire exhibition is divided into three floors, and each covers a different period. You start with the Middle Ages, continue through Rudolfine Prague, the totalitarian regime, and end with modern history. It’s not built on a large number of original artifacts, but rather on a visual experience and a combination of scenery, lighting, and digital content.
What we enjoyed the most was the interactivity. There aren’t just static objects, but elements you can touch or try out. You can try some elements, and elsewhere the app will ‘animate’ images or supplement the story. We saw period weapons, instruments of torture (which sends shivers down your spine), but also things from the communist era that our parents remember. It won’t be the same without the app
An important thing to know in advance: the museum relies on augmented reality. You need to download the Story of Prague app on site. Through your phone, you’ll see things that aren’t physically there, or static images will come to life.
If you’re not used to using your phone during tours, you might find it distracting. On the other hand, it’s precisely thanks to the app that the visit is more dynamic than in a classic museum.
Our tip: Wi-Fi is available in the museum (StoryOfPrague and password praguestory), but we recommend having your phone charged. The app is essential for a full experience; without it, you’ll only see part of the exhibits. If you don’t have headphones, you can read the accompanying texts in the museum, but with audio, it’s a level better.
Practical information and ticket prices
You’ll find the museum at Křižovnické nám. 194/1, 110 00 Staré Město, which is a tourist centre, but it’s quiet inside. Don’t look for parking here; it’s better to take a tram (e.g., number 9 – Národní divadlo stop or number 15 – Malostranské náměstí stop). We spent about an hour and a half in the museum, which we think is the ideal time to see everything without getting overwhelmed.
The standard ticket price is 390 CZK (about €16), children’s 190 CZK (about €7.9), and family (2+2) 990 CZK (about €41). But thanks to Travel Gingers, you can save 15% on each ticket.

Honest summary: Is Story of Prague worth a visit?

The question is: which one is better? The answer isn’t simple, because each one offers a completely different angle.

Our verdict on the comparison: Don’t look for a winner. Back in Time is about wonder and how it makes you feel. It’s cutting-edge technology. Story of Prague draws you in deeper to specific human stories and historical context, using virtual reality through your phone’s camera. Ideally, you’d visit both.
Honest summary: is Story of Prague worth visiting?
If you’re looking for a classic museum with a large number of original exhibits, Story of Prague probably won’t be ideal for you. However, if you want a modernly presented overview of the history of Prague and the Czech Republic and don’t mind using your phone during the tour for a more intense experience, it makes sense.
For us, it was a great experience mainly because history literally surrounds you. For us, it’s a great stop when you’re wandering through the centre and want to learn the stories behind Prague and the Czech Republic.
Also worth visiting in Prague is the Titanic exhibition, or in Wrocław, Poland’s largest marine world.
